This month, we hosted two events for people interested in volunteering with us at Wild Rutland. The events were open to everyone in and around Rutland who are interested in heritage and nature restoration, and we were delighted that the spots on both days filled up quickly.
Although we could only have limited numbers for the events, we would like anyone who was unable to make to please fill out this short form so we can involve you in future events and opportunities.
We’re keen to involve people who live in Rutland and beyond. Everyone is welcome.
Both events welcomed more than 40 attendees into the quiet tranquillity of Wild Rutland for a guided walk around some of the proposed site. The tour included a walk and talk introducing our principles and future ambitions. There was glorious sunshine on one day, and ‘atmospheric’ weather on the second.
Thank you to all who attended.
The Wild Rutland site is not normally accessible to the public so these events offered a rare opportunity to experience the heritage landscape and find out how people could play a role in its restoration and conservation.
During the events, the future volunteers heard all about the future volunteering experiences that the project will offer soon. Opportunities will initially include practical habitat restoration and creation across the woodland and wider landscape, surveying of many species, and even the chance to lead wildlife tours.
As well as supporting wildlife and having a positive impact on the environment, volunteering in nature can have great mental health benefits. It can also make people feel more connected and engaged with their local countryside. This is what Wild Rutland is about, helping people and wildlife to thrive together.
Hugh Vere Nicoll, CEO of Wild Rutland said: “There is so much passion for restoring and conserving the beautiful Rutland countryside within the local community and further afield. The fact that so many people put on their walking boots and joined us for the events shows the appetite there is for wildlife volunteering right on our doorstep.
“It is very important to us that Wild Rutland is something that the community can truly feel part of. These volunteering days are only the beginning, and we will soon be building a programme of opportunities for more people to join. We don’t want anyone to feel like they missed out on these events. If you were unable to make it this time, please get in touch with us so we can invite you along next time. We would love for you to join us.”
