An afternoon of all things Osprey, with the rare chance to view and photograph site B, the original nesting site of Osprey in England.
Join the Wild Rutland team for a guided session through Burley Woods, and out to our viewing point of Site B, photography will be permitted and chicks will be fledging.
Our safaris include a semi-strenuous walk with regular pauses including a light tea & cake stop. You'll need a reasonable level of fitness and be able to cope with uneven, wet and often slippery ground. On wet days, wellies are a necessity.

Explore Burley Wood at night, with the chance to view the once common sight of female glow worms twinkling in the moonlight to attract a mate.
Wild Rutland hosts a significant portion of the Leicestershire and Rutland population, working with other stakeholders to increase these mystical creatures.
Whilst the majority of this trip is on good paths, this activity will be at night and so there are risks involved. sensible footwear and warm clothing recommended.

A morning exploring the magical world of our wonderful moth population and checking our live trap moth surveys at Burley Wood, home to some of the UKs most rare species.
Join the Wild Rutland team to check and identify before releasing the moths caught overnight. This activity can be accessible to all but suitable clothing and footwear is recommended.

A small group photography session to see the Glow Worms of Burley Wood, one of the largest populations in East England.
Whilst the majority of this trip is on good paths, this activity will be at night and so there are risks involved. Sensible footwear and warm clothing recommended. All equipment to be provided by attendees.

A morning expedition to discover the butterflies and insects of Burley Wood. If the conditions are correct, you may see clouds of butterflies through the ancient woodland, basking in the sun and towering amongst the oaks.

An afternoon walk to see the Ancient & Veteran trees of Burley Wood. A chance to explore the history of some of the oldest trees in Leicestershire and Rutland.

Tuesday 29th September 2026, 09:30am - 12pm
A guided walk through Burley wood with renowned mycologist Claudio Bincoletto to investigate the autumn mushroom species growing in profusion. We shall identify species as we discover them before gathering for a woodland breakfast of privately grown fungi species and a practical demonstration of 'planting' your own log with spores. You shall head home with a full understanding of how to grow in your own garden and a finished seeded log, ready for fruiting in a few months time.
You'll need a reasonable level of fitness and be able to cope with uneven, wet and often slippery ground. On wet days, wellies are a necessity. Please make us aware in advance of any allergies.

A small group session for macro photographers to capture mushrooms, fungi and lichen throughout the Ancient Burley & Rushpit Woodlands.

A dawn small group photographic safari thorough the woods, with the focus on dawn chorus birds and the resident mammal population. Fallow, Roe & Muntjac all present at this time of year. Our safaris are a semi strenuous walk with regular pauses including a light breakfast stop. You'll need a reasonable level of fitness and be able to cope with uneven, wet and often slippy ground. On wet days, wellies are a necessity.

A walked tour to spot the fallow, roe and muntjac within Burley wood. If conditions are right you’ll have the chance to enjoy the fallow bucks at their stands, their calls echoing through the woods.
